Home-based work is one of the most sought-after and requested ways of earning an additional or sole-supporting income; however, for those potential telecommuters seeking work, a dedication to the job and having superior career-based skills and experience are the keys to experiencing a career performing home-based work.

Interested parties must have a quiet, dedicated daily work area, as well as a back-up plan established for family emergencies; in the event any should happen.By far, one of the most prevalent myths regarding working from home is that parents who work at home can have more time to spend with their children.

Unfortunately, this is a half-truth, as the only extra time in the day to spend with children is the time spent driving to and from work each day. Generally parents will need to hire sitters, work opposite shifts or trade childcare days with trusted members of the familial unit. Furthermore, when a plan is in place, there still needs to be an emergency plan, as children are still vulnerable to illnesses and family emergencies can occur.

To add to the myths about working from home, another one is that jobs are easy money and anyone can do them. This is another half-truth, as there are low-paying, menial tasks that only require basic computer operations but if looking to advance to a permanent, home-based career; specialized training, relevant education and related job experience will allow career seekers to have a competitive edge when looking for a work at home job.

If professional state or industry certifications are required, make sure the certifications are nationally-recognized or valid in the telecommuting job's home state, as many company headquarters are located throughout the United States and beyond.

Job searching also requires job seekers to have a resume specifically designed to land a home-based job. This involves stating education, past employment information and listing home office capabilities. Furthermore, work availability, adjusted to the potential employer's time zone should also be noted in the cover letter.

When designing the cover letter, in addition to availability, be sure to note the position applying for and direct the cover letter to the company's hiring manager and/or Human Resources Department.
